Everyone is so busy these days; an occasional review of some simple seasonal tips can keep your pet safe and give you peace of mind:
- Staying warm when the temperature drops will require extra calories; feed your pet accordingly - Contact us (401-862-8001) or consult your Vet if you need advise on feeding.
- Pets like the smell and taste of antifreeze; even a small amount can kill. Thoroughly clean up spills at once; store containers out of reach.
- Keep your pet on a regular diet. Human foods can be harmful: Meat trimmings, bones, spicy dishes, chocolate, onions, grapes and raisins can be toxic. Also avoid tomato-based foods.
- Keep garbage/trash secure and out of reach, it can be quite appealing this time of year: Proliferation of bacteria on left-over food, food wrapping; not to mention the problem of ingestion of aluminum foil, plastic wrap or the string from your roast.
- Holiday Plants that are toxic to pets: Christmas rose, holly, mistletoe, philodendron and dieffenbachia.
- Keep tinsel and glass ornaments out of reach, especially from cats/kittens; keep pets away from any water in your tree stand - tree sap becomes mixed with the water, making it toxic.
- Electrical extension cords should be hidden/covered.
- Remove ice & snow from your pets paws and do your best to avoid areas where salt or other harmful chemicals are used to melt ice.
- Outdoor pets should have adequate shelter and be brought in when weather is severe.
- Cats & kittens may seek the warmth of the cars engine to nap or get out of the weather; knock on the hood, honk the horn and wait a few minutes before starting the engine.
