Pet Connection has been affiliated with Therapy Dogs International since the year 2000 when our two year old Rottweiler Rajah became certified as a therapy dog. Many people were surprised to learn she was a Rottweiler
- she's so friendly. Occasionally groups of pre-schoolers would visit the nursing and it was during those meetings that Rajah was in her glory. Surrounded by little people she loved the attention while remaining calm amidst the children's enthusiasm and laughter. In 2002 we became certified evaluators for Therapy Dogs International. We have tested many dogs since then, certifying dogs and handlers across both Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Pet Connection is presently the evaluator/consultant for Therapy Dog programs at Rhode Island Hospital and Miriam Hospitals in Providence RI and the Potter League, in Middletown, RI. In addition to therapy work, Pet Connection has become very active in the evaluation and consultation of dogs and handlers for "Reading to Rover" programs in South County, North Kingstown, Aquidneck Island and Bristol Schools.
There are opportunities for you to volunteer an hour or so a week and do something that both you and your dog will find rewarding. Giving your dog a job is a wonderful way to give them a purposeful outlet for their social and obedience skills. The criterion begins with dogs having to be a minimum age of one year old. Temperament and personality needs to be outgoing yet stable, friendly around people (strangers) as well as other dogs and animals - no signs of aggression, shyness or resentment. Obedience training (formal or informal) is required: Sit, Down, Stay, Comes when called and Leave-it are mandatory. Not every dog is suited for this type of work. Some dogs can be too friendly/sociable, becoming over stimulated when meeting new people or entering new surroundings: These pets while harmless in most respects could unintentionally injure a small child or senior citizen; handlers must have absolute control of their dogs at all times without having to resort to physical restraint of any kind.
This is an opportunity to show the world how good your dog really is - Maybe show off a new trick or two while your at it. Become a certified Therapy Dog Team and share the wonderful (Human-Animal)relationship you
have with others who are less fortunate: Visiting hospitals, nursing homes and participating in after school reading programs is a way for you and your dog to make a meaningful contribution to your community and have a great time doing it. Lighting up another persons day can be such a rewarding experience, you'll keep coming back for more.
